Very close to Aveiro is Águeda, a Portuguese city that until the 30th of September is decorated with brightly colored umbrellas thanks to the Umbrella Sky Project.
Located 200 kms from Tui, it was little known among international tourists until the Umbrella Sky Project put it on the map 10 years ago.
This artistic project has served as a real tourist boost, not only in Águeda, but also in its surroundings, attracting thousands of visitors to the city every summer.
The aim of the project is to connect people trough color, dressing the city streets with umbrellas of all shades that, in addition, provide shade for visitors.
Before filling up with floating umbrellas, Águeda was somewhat undefined city that, with the pedestrianization of many of its shopping streets, had lost most of its customers. Thanks to the colorful revitalization plan for the area, Águeda registered a substantial growth in tourism and, consequently, in the income of the local commerce, which increased its sales.
Social networks contributed a lot to promote Águeda as an attractive photographic setting. People from all over the world come to the city willing to take (and publish) their long-awaited photo under the colorful umbrellas, with the benefit that this also brings to the hotel sector.
